The Program
Wonnenberg Angus is based upon raising practical bulls for the commercial and seed stock cattleman with emphasis on calving ease, good growth, reproduction, and exceptional disposition. Honesty and integrity are staples of the operation - if ever an issue with the cattle, rest assured it will be taken care of. Over the years, customers have enjoyed the extremely docile disposition and longevity of Wonnenberg Angus bulls. Bull calves are not aggressively fed so they hold up well in the pasture during the first breeding season and beyond. Cattle are constantly handled with disposition in mind. Sale bulls and replacement heifers are selected within the herd each year with primary emphasis on calving ease, fleshing ability, growth potential, and maternal traits. Only the top 20-25% of purebred bull calves are retained as sale bulls; the rest are marketed as steers. Artificial insemination is primarily utilized on heifers and young cows. Much of the matrue cow herd is bred to hand-selected service based upon both phenotype and genotype with foremost concentration on docilityd, growth, and dam's performance history. A lot of time is dedicated to selecting sires that fit into the longstandding program. The Wonnenberg Angus cow herd benefits from more than six decades of genetic progress.
